# Nursing Standard-of-Care Review

Nursing Standards of Care

Objective analysis of nursing care, standards, and documentation within my clinical expertise.

Clinical Analysis for Legal Matters
I review medical records, nursing documentation, applicable policies and procedures, and other case materials to evaluate whether the nursing care provided was consistent with the applicable standard of care.
The review may identify potential deviations, documentation concerns, communication failures, patient-safety issues, and whether appropriate nursing interventions and escalation occurred. Findings are clearly explained to help the retaining attorney understand the nursing issues relevant to the case.
Ideal For
• Plaintiff and defense attorneys
• Medical malpractice and nursing negligence matters
• Surgical and perioperative nursing cases
• Postoperative-care concerns
• Cases involving nursing documentation, communication, monitoring, or escalation
How It Works
\1. Case Review: I review the medical records, allegations, policies, and questions provided by the retaining attorney.
\2. Standard-of-Care Analysis: I evaluate the nursing actions and documentation within the context of the patient’s condition and applicable nursing responsibilities.
\3. Findings and Opinions: I communicate my findings through consultation, a written report, or expert-witness services, depending on the scope of the engagement.

## FAQ

### What does a legal nurse consultant do?

A legal nurse consultant applies nursing knowledge and clinical experience to the review and analysis of medically related legal matters. This may include organizing and reviewing medical records, developing chronologies, identifying significant clinical issues, and clearly communicating medical information to the legal team.

### How can a legal nurse consultant help with medical records?

Medical records can be lengthy, complex, and difficult to navigate. A legal nurse consultant can organize the records, reconstruct the clinical timeline, identify missing or inconsistent documentation, and explain how the notes, tests, treatments, and outcomes relate to one another.

### What types of legal matters may benefit from nursing insight?

Nursing insight may be valuable in matters involving medical malpractice, personal injury, surgical or perioperative care, postoperative complications, obstetrics and women’s health, pediatrics, and other cases involving medical treatment or nursing care.

### Why is clinical context important when reviewing a case?

A single chart entry rarely tells the entire story. Clinical findings must be considered alongside the patient’s condition, treatment plan, surrounding documentation, and sequence of events. Clinical context can help distinguish routine details from information that may warrant closer investigation.

### How does a legal nurse consultant support an attorney's work?

A legal nurse consultant helps the legal team understand medical terminology, navigate complex records, identify relevant clinical issues, and determine areas that may require further investigation or expert review. This allows the attorney to evaluate the medical aspects of a case more efficiently and from a clinically informed perspective.
